Motivation: What is your burning desire? Is it pure and of good will?

'That Self is indeed Brahman (eternal, unchanging, infinite, immanent), consisting of knowledge, mind, life, sight, hearing, earth, water, wind, ether, light and no light, desire and no desire, anger and no anger, right or wrong, and all things. Now as a man is like this or like that, according as he acts and according as he behaves, so will he be:--a man of good acts will become good, a man of bad acts, bad. He becomes pure by pure deeds, bad by bad deeds.
And here they say that a person consists of desires. And as is his desire, so is his will; and as is his will, so is his deed; and whatever deed he does, that he will reap.'
The Upanishads, Part 2

Tunes: Broken Bells

My lovely friend Esme introduced me to the up and coming band, Broken Bells. They'll be in Austin this weekend for ACL. Just a bit envious if you've got tickets! (Hot songs: The High Road and The Ghost Inside.) Also Saturday, previously featured The XX will be performing. This probably wouldn't be on my traditional yoga playlist, but you never know... I've been known to throw in a few funky tunes! Especially when we hit the core sequences... anything with a good beat will keep ya going a few more reps!
Have a lovely weekend... Namaste.

Grub: Blend of cous cous, veggies & tuna

Nothing too hot about this dish, but it sure is tasty! All you've gotta do is chop up some squash, zucchini, and whatever other veggies your little heart desires. Season them with a little olive oil, pepper & salt. Add in cooked, whole wheat cous cous and top with tuna. We're hooked on the Bumble Bee Easy Peel Sensations (Lemon & Pepper and Sundried Tomato & Basil). It's the perfect lunch or quick dinner. I especially like the crunch effect of the veggies... mmm, mmm, good!
Oh and because to me, this is so damn healthy - a sweet treat is the ideal way to wrap up this meal!

On a side note, Eddie and his mom just left down to the Valley for a few days. Quiet around the house - just me and the dogs! I think a cleaning party is on the horizon. Wine... check! Music... check! Swiffer... check! Clorox disinfectant wipes... check! ...

Fab Find: The Yoga Sutras

Many of you know I love to read either during my classes or right before resting in Savasana. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali translated by Sri Swami Satchidananda is my go-to book for inspiration, motivation and peace. Sutra literally means a thread or a line that holds things together. Think of a string of pearls. I'll admit, I've never read the book straight through, it's rather deep. However, it provides great wisdom and knowledge as to how we as yogis should live our lives, interact with other beings, and learn to let go. The book is divided into four chapters: concentration, practice, progressing and liberation. These are very vague, so in order to see for yourself just how powerful this book is, I highly recommend adding it to your stash. Even if it's something you pick up every now and then. I guarantee, whatever passage you decide to read will have a lasting impact.

Posture: Lord of the Dance Pose

(not-ah-raj-AHS-anna)
nata = actor, dancer, mime
raja = king

Stand in Tadasana (Mountain Pose). Shift weight onto right food and lift left heel toward left cheek (not facial cheek). Tee hee. Pull the knee cap up to keep the standing leg straight and strong. Reach back with left hand and grasp the outside of the left foot or ankle. Avoid compression in the low back by actively lifting your pubis toward your navel, while at the same time pressing your tailbone toward the floor.
Begin to lift left foot up, away from the floor and back, away from your torso. Extend left thigh behind you and parallel to the floor. Stretch right arm forward, in front of torso and parallel to the floor. And smile.
Hold posture for 20-30 seconds. Release the grasp on the foot, place left foot back and onto floor. Repeat for the same length of time on other side.

Benefits: stretches the shoulders and chest * stretches the thighs, groins and abdomen * strengthens the legs and ankles * improves balance

Monday ~ Mantra

"I have become my own version of an optimist. If I can't make it through one door, I'll go through another door - or I'll make a door. Something terrific will come no matter how dark the present."

Rabindranath Tagore, was a Bengali mystic, Brahmo poet, author and Asia's first Nobel Prize winner
I subscribe to The Daily Love. It is exactly what it sounds like. Each morning, I roll over in bed to turn off my iphone alarm and since I'm there, I check the funky spam emails that have been sent to me overnight. You know the crap I'm talkin about... you get it too. There's always one email however, that is anything but trash. It's from TDL. I smile there with gunk in my eyes because somehow or another, the message speaks to me.
The present is dark for me. As trying as these days are, I'm alive. I can breathe and move. I have my mat and I have Eddie.  Soon enough, I'll be making my door.
It's good to be back,
Kristal

Posture: Setu Bandha Sarvangasana

(SET-too BAHN-dah)
setu = dam or bridge
bandha = lock

Lie down on the mat, bend knees and set feet on the floor hip-width apart. As you lift the hips up, walk the shoulder blades towards one another and interlace the fingers. Push the tailbone upward toward the pubis, engaging the hamstrings and glutes. Arms press into the mat gently and extend long towards the heels to help stay on the tops of the shoulders.
Lift buttocks until thighs are about parallel to the floor. Keep knees directly over the heels and lengthen the tailbone toward the back of the knees. Lift pubis toward the navel. Chin lifts away from the sternum and shoulder blades firm against the back. Stay in the posture for 5-10 deep breathes and exhale as you roll the spine slowly down onto the mat.

Benefits: stretches the chest, spine and neck * calms the brain and helps alleviate stress and mild depression * stimulates abdominal organs, lungs and thyroid * rejuvenates tired legs * improves digestion * helps relieve symptoms of menopause * relieves menstrual discomfort * reduces anxiety, fatigue, backache, headache, and insomnia * therapeutic for asthma, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, and sinusitis

Be cautious of the following: If you've had a neck injury, avoid this posture unless you are practicing under the supervision of an experienced teacher.

~ Thanks to YJ for helping me out this week as I didn't have a photo of me in bridge!

Mantra: Don't worry, be happy!

"Happiness is the natural state of human kind. God has given us, free of cost, unlimited and inexhaustible sources of happiness. Life evolved on earth against tremendous odds. This life itself is the greatest happiness. OH! To be alive is the greatest happiness. To have a sound body and mind is a privilege which we hardly appreciate. God has seen to it that we are born in a family and later acquire a family which gives us great happiness and joy. God gave us beautiful sun and moon, starts and sky, mountains and forests, rivers and oceans, fruits and vegetables, and rain and snow and sunshine - all for our happiness and to keep us happy!
Humans rival God in everything. The motive behind human progress is happiness. Humans made all things for their happiness and enjoyment. They discovered fire and wheel, made houses and tools, engaged in agriculture and crafts. They made cars and airplanes, radio and TV and computers. They developed music and dance, fine arts and literature. All these things are not only useful; they are also great source of happiness to humankind.
But the ultimate happiness lies in mind. With a happy and positive attitude human kind can be happy in very difficult circumstances too. There is no use in worrying for past things and things to come. Enjoy the unlimited happiness scattered all around us in unlimited quantity in God given and human made lives and things; be happy in your mind by having a positive and happy attitude; and keep your soul in a state of perfect happiness, bliss, and nirvana in communion with the universal soul. Make others happy and you will Be HaPpY!"

Grub: I Heart Nanogreens

I wanted to share what I eat most mornings for breakfast. Now I know it doesn't look like much but know that this is usually an hour and a half before practicing. Most traditional yogis do not eat anything prior to practice, but if I don't eat anything I begin to feel nauseous.  I first started eating rice cakes a few years ago while on a cleanse and since then, I have been addicted! I buy the Flax with Tamari (Lundberg Family Farms brand). The flax contains omega-3 that promotes cardiovascular health, supports the immune system and promotes general health. These are wheat free, gluten free and made with natural brown rice. I top the 'ol cakearoo with organic strawberry spread and a handful of blueberries - who wouldn't look forward to this for breakfast?
That green stuff off to the side is Nanogreens. Eddie and I drink this algae-looking drink daily and LOVE IT!! You gotta be able to look past the outside and focus on what's in the inside to really enjoy and benefit from it. (Sort of like yoga!) In a nutshell, it's fruits and veggies to the power of 10. It's considered a 'fast' healthy food for energized lifestyles. It has a naturally sweet taste to it and is surprisingly enjoyable. We actually look forward to having our 'greens and crave it when we've run out and don't have any on hand. Here are more benefits:

                increase energy, naturally, without stimulants
reduce appetite, improve metabolism and assist weight loss efforts
restore regular elimination and assist digestion
reduce inflammation, relieve stiff and achy joints and muscles
lower risk of cancer, diabetes, heart disease and stroke
                inhibit hardening of the arteries
protect your vision from age related vision loss and blindness
maintain strong bone support, immune function and increase resistance to infections
                reduce allergy symptoms without drowsiness
improve mental acuity and protect mind and memory
detoxify toxic meals and chemicals, help slow aging of the skin and dulling of the hair

I sell various Biopharma products including Nanogreens so if you're interested let me know!
Here's to happy breakfasts to kick-start your day!

Posture: Adho Mukha Svanasana

(AH-doh MOO-kah shvah-NAHS-anna)
adho = downward
mukha = face
svana = dog

Aka Downward facing dog, Adho Mukha Svanasana is a pose in the traditional Sun Salutation sequence. My students know this very well.  : ) From upward facing dog or all-fours, lift the sitting bones up toward the ceiling and stretch through the hamstrings. Lower the heels towards the mat and straighten legs, but don't lock the knees. Spread the fingers wide and press evenly through fingertips and knuckles. Firm the shoulder blades against the back, then widen them and draw them towards the tailbone. Keep the head between the upper arms.

Benefits: calms the brain and helps revitalize stress and mild depression * energizes the body * stretches shoulders, hamstrings, calves, arches and hands * helps relieve symptoms of menopause * relieves menstrual discomfort * helps prevent osteoporosis * improves digestion * relieves headache, insomnia, back pain, and fatigue * therapeutic for high blood pressure, asthma, flat feet, sciatica and sinusitis

Holy moly with all these wonderful benefits, we should ALL be doing this posture DAILY!

Be cautious of the following: carpal tunnel syndrome * diarrhea * if you're pregnant, don't do this posture late-term

Motivation: Come Live The Life

So the inspiration behind this week's mantra/motivation stems from the video below. It's a Belgium rock band called K's Choice and the song is titled 'Come Live The Life". Read the lyrics below and know that no matter how choppy the water is at times, what lies ahead is beautiful and most serene. The lines ring true: Your eyes are the gateway to your soul... and indeed, All is forgiven. Summer is among us friends! Go out and play and live the live you've been given!

Lyrics to Come Live The Life :
You rush out, it's another day
And pass yourself along the way again
How much longer ?
And you're keeping up the pace you're in
You feel like crashing into something new
How much longer ?

If your eyes are the gateway to your soul
What's broken will be whole again
And whole is hard to shatter
I'll dive into your eyes
I'm never coming out
Not until we all desolve into what matters

You wanna bury secrets deep inside
But it's too cold a place to hide them all
How much longer ?
So somewhere in your eyes I see
A wall of fire moving toward me
I'm here

If your eyes are the gateway to your soul
What's broken will be whole again
And whole is hard to shatter
I'll dive into your eyes
I'm never coming out
Not until we all desolve into what matters

So come on, come on, come on
All is forgiven
So come on, come on
Come live the life you're given

If you go out, it's a sunny day
Away, away, away, away
Come on, come on, come on
All is forgiven
So come on, come on
Come live the life
So come on, come on, come on
All is forgiven
So come on, come on
Come live the life
So come on, come on
Come live the life you're given

Grub: Shrimp Stir-Fry

This is one of our faves... it's so quick and super easy to make. Dinner on the fly! As I mentioned earlier, I've been pretty busy this week so I took a look in our fridge to see what we had stocked up that I could use for dinner tonight. We had a bag of frozen stir-fry veggies from Costco so I decided to pick up some shrimp and whip this baby together. Healthy, hot and hella-good!

Ingredients:
Stir-fry veggies (broccoli, sugar snap peas, carrots, red bell pepper, water chestnuts, green beans, shiitake mushrooms, baby corn)
Cooked and deveined shrimp (cut into halves)
Low-sodium soy sauce
Sriracha hot sauce
Extra virgin olive oil

Prep:
Heat veggies and olive oil in wok on high. Add in small pieces of shrimp and top with soy and sriracha sauces (careful with the latter)! All is to taste so if have a love of spicy foods, you may want to be like Eddie and sit the sriracha next to your plate. : ) Whala!

Here are a few photos I'd like to share from the past few days:
This is our camp site last weekend at Andy's on the River in ConCan, TX. We had such a great time and the weather was just perfect for floating the river!

Here are Luna and Diego with their new BFF Macy. Too bad she was only here a few days. Her mama picked her up this morning and L & D have been pretty sad all day. We will miss her, but more so my beautiful and warm-hearted yogi sister Jeneane. Have a safe and wonderful journey dear friend... we are together in spirit always.

I know, I know... I'm a day behind schedule and that's a-o-k. It's been a crazy week catching up from the holiday so we'll be back on track in no time!
Today's fabulous find features the mysore yoga rug. These are traditionally used for Ashtanga Yoga practice and were actually recommended by Pattabhi Jois as the ideal surface for Mysore Ashtanga practice. However, this rug is great for any form of exercise where you will be sweating profusely (Bikram). It is tightly woven 100% cotton that is biodegradable and PVC free!
The rug sits nicely atop any regular yoga mat and also provides a bit of extra cushion for seated and/or kneeling postures. Some of the barefoot yoga co. rugs also have woven lines in the pattern that provide assistance with hand & foot alignment.

Posture: Sarvangasana

Supported shoulder stand pose. Sarvang is a Sanskrit word meaning 'all limbs' or 'complete body'. This posture benefits the complete body.

Two legs reach up as one, thighs and knees spiral inward. Reach the tailbone toward the heels.

Benefits: This posture is an inversion that reverses the effects of gravity, decompresses the spine and helps re-align the arms with the shoulders * Improves energy balance and metabolism by wringing out the thyroid and parathyroid glands in the throat.

Be cautious of the following: This is a shoulder stand and not a neck-stand. Do not turn the head from side to side while in this posture * If this is difficult, try adding a blanket under the shoulders with the back of the head on the floor to preserve a curved space beneath the lower neck * Try to avoid this posture during menstruation.

Fab Find: Always Moola Bandha ribbed tank

This really is classic! For those of you who have never experienced the awkwardness of a teacher explaining this in a yoga class... here ya go: The technique is a drawing up of the muscles of the perineum, in front of the tailbone at the base of the spine. This energy lock then awakens the mooladhara (or root) chakra, arousing powerful energy.

"Once control over the practice has been achieved, we can begin to slowly awaken mooladhara chakra and the kundalini shakti which lies within it. Then we may enjoy the bliss which arises from the union of prana and apana, nada and bindu, the union of the formed with the formless."

Posture: Salabhasana

(sha-la-BAHS-anna)
salabha = locust, grasshopper

Lie on your stomach with arms alongside the body, palms facing up and forehead resting on the mat. Gently lift your head, upper torso and arms. Lift your legs and keep arms parallel to the floor. Softly press abdomen and lower ribs toward the mat. Stay in this position for 5 breaths and lower.
This picture was taken last Saturday in San Marcos. I taught a class to participants of the Tour de Cure bicycle race benefitting the American Diabetes Association. FuN!!

Benefits: strengthens muscles of the spine, buttocks, and backs of the arms and legs * stretches shoulders, chest, belly and thighs * improves posture * stimulates abdominal organs * helps relieve stress

Be cautions of the following: serious back injury * students with neck injuries should keep the head in a neutral position by looking down at the floor

Motivation: Our deepest fear...

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, "Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?"
Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God;
Your playing small doesn't serve the world.

~ Marianne Williamson, quoted by Nelson Mandella in his inaugural speech)

Tunes: Trevor Hall

Trevor Hall... getcha some!

I love... The Lime Tree, Unity, Proof of Destruction... and every song off of the Lace Up Your Shoes album. We learned of him a few years ago in Austin. We were at Stubb's for a Martin Sexton concert and Trevor was the opener. We were blown away completely by his talent, lyrics and performance. He has a new album out called This Is Blue and I cannot wait to listen! You better believe he's on my yoga class playlist! Have a wonderful weekend, I know I will!

Grub: Whole Wheat Greek Orzo Salad

Eddie's carnivorous version sans tomatoes. (Before he added his sriracha!)

My veggie version... oh so delish!

Now we're talkin! My great friend Stephanie sent me this recipe (via Pinch My Salt) and holy moly is it tasty! The cool thing about this salad is that you can add pretty much whatever you'd like (considering it blends well with the overall taste) and customize it to your palate's delight. I knew I wanted to make it my own when I saw that the original calls for finely chopped kalamata olives. I don't care how fine these things may be... we just don't get along. I've never been one for olives and so I kindly omitted them. I also decided to throw in some slivered almonds for an added crunch effect. I guarantee you will not be disappointed. This is the perfect dish for a summer bbq... quick and easy, fresh and so unbelievably healthy!

Serves: 6
Ingredients:
8 oz whole wheat orzo pasta
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
1 teaspoon red wine vinegar
1 tablespoon fresh-squeezed lemon juice
1 medium cucumber, peeled, seeded and finely chopped
1 cup cherry tomotoes, finely chopped
1/3 cup kalamata olives, finely chopped (ew, it hurts just to type it)
2 tablespoons minced fresh mint leaves
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
4 oz feta cheese, crumbled
salt, to taste
fresh ground black pepper, to taste

Prep:
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook pasta for 8-10 minutes. Drain pasta and rinse with cold water, then allow to drain well again. In a large bowl, toss pasta with olive oil, vinegar, and lemon juice. Add remaining ingredients and toss well. Season with salt and fresh ground pepper to taste. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Best when served chilled.

You can also try adding these: finely chopped red onion, red bell pepper, artichoke hearts, fresh chopped dill, or grated lemon zest! I will surely be trying this one again, next time around adding more of these to make it more fun and colorful! Bon appetit!

Fab Find: KOR ONE

This is one cool water bottle man! These KOR vessels are made from BPA-free Tritan and other health-safe materials. There is a hinged cap for easy open and close and you don't have to hold it open when drinking! You don't have to worry about a metal or plastic after-taste and the spout is wide enough to fit ice cubes. I'm weird and like washing dishes, but for those of you who can't live without your dishwasher... these are totally safe! It holds 25 ounces comes with a variety of motivational stones to personalize the bottle cap. Neat-o mosquito - but that's not all...
There's a KOR Register and Recycle program that encourages all customers (despite purchase location) to register their product online and when they are ready to trash the bottle, the company mails the customer a postage-paid return form so that the bottle is sent back to them for 100% recycling! Now that's sustainability! I want one now!!!

Posture: Bakasana

(bahk-AHS-anna)
baka = crane
but a.k.a. crow

This posture is often used as a transition posture into a headstand. From standing, squat down keeping big toes together and separating the knees. Lower hands in front of feed, spreading the fingers wide. As you come to the tip-toes, draw knees into triceps/armpits and lean forward with torso and head. Round the spine, taking the weight of the torso onto the upper arms and keep the head up, the gaze out in front. To release, either slowly return feet to the mat or jump back with an exhalation into chaturanga dandasana.

This is one of my favorite postures... it poses a challenge for sure but also measures the strength of the upper body. Keep trying, it's one that definitely gets easier with practice!

Benefits include: strengthens arms and wrists * stretches through the upper back * strengthens abdominal muscles * opens groins * tones abdominal organs

Together may we work with great energy
May our journey together be brilliant and effective

Tunes: TJ Rehmi

Yoga music with a twist... TJ Rehmi's got it! He's a guitarist, promoter as well as a producer from the UK. His music is filled with wonderful beats, guitar strums and ambient tunes. I absolutely love the album titled, "The Warm Chill" and am excited to listen to more from his newest, "Axis of Ignorance". If you're into more global groove and less pop vocal while you're chillin in pigeon, you've gotta check him out!
Stay dry and safe out there this weekend!

Grub: Turkey Melt Panini

I know, I know... it doesn't quite look like a healthy meal - take my word... it is!! I sort of combined a few recipes to come up with this hearty concoction. Eddie's reaction, "It tastes like a burger!" Right then, I knew he liked it and the idea of leftovers was slim. The best part is, there's so few ingredients and it took less than 20 minutes to prepare. Also, I finally brought out the panini maker... our sweet wedding gift from the padre-in-laws!!

Serves: 3
Ingredients:
Whole wheat English muffins
Indian or Spicy Relish
Deli-sliced oven-roasted turkey
Cheese of your choice - we used Muenster (cause I just can't get enough)
Red bell pepper
Spinach leaves

Prep:
1. Heat panini (or Foreman) grill. Cut bell pepper into long strips.
2. Slice muffin and spread relish on one side. Place spinach leaves and bell pepper on top of relish.
3. Top with 3 slices of turkey and cheese. Cover with top of muffin.
4. Place on grill until the cheese melts, bell pepper softens and muffin gets a tad crispy.

Voila!! I thought I could down more than one for sure... but surprise, surprise - these bad boys are quite filling! Again, a wonderful alternative to a not-so-healthy burger!

Fab Find: Skullcandy

Not sure who introduced us to these earphones... it was a while back. Eddie and I both got a pair from Best Buy because the Apple ones that came with the ipods pretty much sucked. They didn't suck quality of sound-wise, but because they kept falling out of the ears when we'd use them for running. These Skullcandy earphones totally rock. Each pair comes with several different sizes of pillowy caps for the speaker so you use the one that fits perfectly into your ear (Whodathunk? Duh, we all have different shaped ears!). Aside from the fact that they stick in your ears without moving around, the sound quality is incredible! There are so many fun colors to choose from or you can stick with the basic black, white or silver. There's also a fun array of headphones for that DJ friend in your life.  : )

Price: $19.99 (at Best Buy... totally worth it!)

Posture: Virabhadrasana I

a.k.a. Warrior I

From Downward Dog, pivot left foot 45 degrees and step right foot between the hands at the top of the mat. As torso lifts up, hips square and grown heels firmly. Lifting the arms over head, connect the palms, relax through shoulders and neck and take the gaze upward towards thumbs. Right knee should be positioned directly above the ankle and shin should be perpendicular to the floor.

Benefits include: stretches chest and lungs, shoulders and neck, belly and psoas (groins) * strengthens shoulders and arms, and muscles of back * stretches thighs, calves and ankles

Be mindful of the following: those with shoulder problems should keeps raised arms shoulder with apart * those with neck issues should keep head in a neutral position and avoid looking up

Motivation: Turning inward...

"Turn the mind inward and cease thinking of yourself as the body; thereby you will come to know that the self is ever happy. Neither grief nor misery is experienced in this state."
~ Sri Ramana Maharshi

This goes back to the 'ol "don't just a book by its cover" but pertains to the individual... how we look at ourselves. I have always struggled with this (hence the reoccurring nightmare of losing my teeth - which supposedly means I'm overly concerned about my looks)! Through my consistent yoga practice, I've learned to let go of that and focus on what really matters and what's most important. In my classes I say, "it doesn't matter what we look like while in the postures, but how we feel." This is so true... if our drishti is fluttering around like a buzzing bee, our mind is not still. If we are concerned about how the person next to us looks in a certain posture, or we measure ourselves up to our peers, we are not going to benefit from the practice. We have to look inward, past the physical and learn from what's going on in our minds and in our hearts. This is why I love that the yoga practice is not a competition... if anything it's a competition with the true Self and the ego where we learn to let go. This is where we find true happiness and true freedom.

Tunes: Breathe Me

I most definitely have this song on my yoga playlist. It's been out for a while now, but most recently became more popular after Coke used it in one of their commercials. Sia does a fabulous job in this 2008 SXSW performance. I especially like the pause right about 1:45... WOW!! Some of her other greats are "Day too soon" and "Clap your hands". Similar artists include Zero 7, Jewel and Goldfrapp. Enjoy, and Happy Friday!! Take advantage of the outdoors this weekend... and give Mom all the attention she deserves on Sunday!

Grub: Shrimp Paulista

Residents of Sao Paulo refer to themselves as Paulistas. This dish is a regional fave and super easy to make! After this, I've got a chopper on my list of things to buy for our kitchen! Never thought I'd use it so didn't register for it when we got married. I think it'll make my life a lot easier!

Serves: 6
Ingredients:
2 lbs. large shrimp, peeled and deveined
2 tablespoons lime juice
1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro, divided
8 cloves garlic, minced, divided
1/2 tspn kosher salt, divided
1/2 tspn crushed red pepper, divided
2 tablespoons EVOO

Prep:
1. Place shrimp in a medium nonreactive bowl and toss with lime juice, 1/4 cup cilantro, half the garlic, 1/4 tspn salt and 1/4 tspn crushed red pepper. Cover and let marinate in the fridge for 20 minutes.
2. Heat oil in large skillet over medium-high heat. Add shrimp, marinade and remaining garlic; cook until the shrimp are just cooked through, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat; add remaining 1/4 cup cilantro, 1/4 tspn salt and 1/4 tspn red pepper. Toss to combine.

Note: We topped it off with a bit of Sriracha (Eddie puts this on almost everything he eats) hot sauce. Organic brown rice completed the meal... absolutely delicious!

Fab Find: FRUITZ Watches

I first saw this item a few days ago in the June issue of Yoga Journal. Natural frequencies inside... what? Okay so here's how it works (taken from their site) - just as you receive important vitamins from fresh fruits, now you can get important natural frequencies that work with your body's energy field. FRUITZ watches use a natural frequency technology that resonates at 7-9 hertz, encompassing the chief resonant frequency of the earth and is harmonious and grounding to all life. People who wear these watches report better sleep, less stress, more focus and better concentration. Wait a minute... I feel like I get all of that with my daily yoga practice! If you do want to splurge a little and don a little watermelon or passion fruit on your wrist, you can find these at Nordstrom and Bloomingdale's.

Posture: Marichyasana A

(mar-ee-chee-AHS-anna)
Discovered by the sage, Maricha in Indian mythology.

This posture comes after Janu Shirshana C in the Ashtanga practice. Left leg extends out and foot is flexed. The right heel draws in toward the hip (outside of foot is in line with the hip so there's space between the foot and left thigh). Right arm reaches out and then internally rotates around the right folded leg. Left arm reaches around the back and right hand binds to left wrist. Inhale to lengthen the torso and exhale to fold forward. Take five breathes in this posture with drishti to nose.

Benefits include: calms the brain * stretches spine and shoulders * stimulates abdominal organs like liver and kidneys *restores digestive power * abdominal pain during menstruation

Be mindful of the following: pregnant women should not practice this posture after 2nd month

Tunes: Sex On Fire

Thank you Sugarland for covering this song. The original version is written and performed by Kings of Leon and totally awesome but man oh man, this video is absolutely sensual, hot, rockin and you got it... on FIRE! I especially like the acoustic guitar... and Jennifer Nettles, wow what a voice! So, although this probably won't be found on my yoga playlist (sorry guys), you bet I'll be playing it in my car singing at the top of my lungs!

Enjoy... and have a lovely weekend! I know I will, after teaching my 9:30am vinyasa class at Yoga Shala in the morning, I will be meeting friends from Nydia's Yoga Therapy for lunch and a sutra study with the lady of the afternoon - Ms. Beryl Bender Birch! I cannot wait to meet and learn from this wonderful teacher, author and yoga therapist!

Grub: Chicken and Cous Cous Salad

Okay okay, I admit the intention of this part of the blog is so that I push my self to cook more! I haven't been such a good wife in regards to making delicious, healthy dinners for my man and I. For the most part, I blame my teaching and crazy schedule. It had gotten to a point where we were eating convenient and tasty Kashi pizzas 3 days in a row for dinner. I know... slap on the hand (but those are darn good if you haven't tried)!
Anyway, my goal is to make a new dish at least once a week and this blog will surely help keep me accountable! Instead of posting the professional photo from the site, I'll post my own just so you have proof I'm sticking to my plan!

This week I made a very tasty and fresh salad, chicken and cous cous. It's wonderful for summer bbqs or pot-lucks. We had plenty leftover for lunch the next day. (I was so happy when Eddie came home from work and asked if we had any left! That'll be my test to see if he really did like it!!)

Serves: 4
Salad Ingredients:
1  1/4 cups fat-free, low sodium chicken broth
1 (5.7 oz) box uncooked couscous
1 1/2 cups cubed cooked chicken (6 oz)
1/2 cup thinly sliced green onions
1/2 cup diced radishes (about 3 large)
1/2 cup chopped seeded peeled cucumber
1/4 cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley
2 tablespoons pine nuts

Dressing Ingredients:
1/4 cup white wine vinegar
1 1/2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1 tspn ground cumin (I didn't have any and it still tasted fine)
1/2 tspn salt
1/8 tspn freshly grounded black pepper
1 garlic clove, minced

Prep:
Bring broth to boil in a medium saucepan; gradually stir in couscous. Remove from heat; cover and let stand for 5 minutes. Fluff with a fork. Spoon couscous into a large bowl; cool. Add chicken, onions, radishes, cucumber, parsley and pine nuts; toss gently to combine.
To prepare dressing, combine vinegar and remaining ingredients, stirring with a whisk. Drizzle dressing over salad; toss to combine.

Note: You can toast the pine nuts in a dry skillet over medium/high heat. Stir frequently, as soon as they become fragrant, remove nuts from the pan. We warmed up a few pieces of pita bread as well!  : )

Fab Find: Newest lulu campaign

I'll admit, I LOVE that lulu pants eliminates the hated frontal wedgie. C'mon any other tight-fitting workout pant would naturally ride up. That's what makes them worth every dollar. Not only that, but there's no need to worry about the (luon) fabric darkening in the crotch when you're in a sweaty vinyasa class. lululemon continues to shock people with this cheeky ad in the upcoming June issue of Yoga Journal. Model is accordingly in ustrasana pose... or camel. Oh and how appropriate - today is Hump Day! Okay, okay I'll stop.

Posture: Ubhaya Padangusthasana

(oub-HA-ya pod-awng-goosh-TAWS-ahna)

Ubhaya - Padangusthasana
both - big toe pose

A deep hamstring stretch, this pose focuses on balancing on sit bones with legs extended. The index, middle finger and thumb grab the big toes and heels kick out. Drishti (gazing point) is towards the toes or nose and spine is long with shoulders relaxed.

Benefits include: abdominal toning * hamstring stretch * massage of the entire spinal column, as each vertebrae is stimulated * purifies and strengthens waist, genitals and stomach.

On a side note, check out this inspiring video from CNN about a Detroit man who lost over 300 lbs. and credits YOGA! Weight should never be an excuse as to why you cannot get started!
